African children stand in a playground and laugh at the camera. The project they are involved in is called For Smiling Children. It is supported by the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz, a star hotel in Switzerland.

Orphanage in Tanzania

The orphanage in Boma is a project of the Swiss foundation KARIBU Kinderhilfe. “Karibu” means “welcome” in Swahili. The Boma centre is an orphanage with an integrated school, and the St. Francis School gives lessons to disabled (blind, visually impaired and deaf-mute) and able-bodied children as well as albinos.

Children with disabilities face incredible difficulties in Tanzania. Because of the immense stigma attached to their conditions, they are neglected and even persecuted, with nobody seeing to their development. At the Boma centre, 25 teachers (four of whom are blind and two deaf-mute) teach the children from nursery school up until seventh grade. Around 260 pupils currently visit the St. Francis School, most of whom are boarders. They are taught in integrated classes, which means that day pupils, disabled children and boarders attend lessons together. Many classes are run by up to three teachers together to ensure that everyone has a chance to follow the teaching.
