African children sit in a circle and paint. The teacher helps them with this. They are supported by a project called For Smiling Children, which is co-financed by the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz. The Grand Resort is a star hotel in Switzerland.

Siyabulela South Africa

Siyabulela means “We thank you” in Xhosa, the language of a local ethnic group and one of South Africa’s eleven official languages. The project was launched by Dr. Carl-Heinz Duisberg in 2001. He is the patron of the Siyabulela Pre-Primary School. The Grand Resort Bad Ragaz has supported the project since June 2009.

Most of the children at the Siyabulela Pre-Primary School come from poorer families and live in the townships. The school offers an alternative to children who would otherwise be living on the street. In Kleinmond, a South African town, they receive a basic education in topics like hygiene, dental care, social interaction and many others. Around 105 children between three and six visit the preschool from Monday to Friday. Classes are in Afrikaans and Xhosa. Once the pupils turn six, they move on to lessons in reading and mathematics in preparation for primary school. Several times a year, doctors from a nearby clinic visit the school to examine and vaccinate them.
